Afternoon tea in Cerne Abbas

I had an appointment in Dorset today so on my way back I made a detour via Cerne Abbas, better known as the home of the Cerne giant. When I moved from France to Dorset in 1981, I stayed in Cerne Abbas with my parents and my sister for the first night and the next morning we drove to our new home in Affpuddle.

Cerne Abbas is a pretty place with a mix of architecture including many pretty thatched cottages.
The New Inn  shown on the right is where I spent my first night of the move in 1981

I had afternoon tea at Abbots, a pretty tea room with a wonderful selection of homemade cakes.

After refreshments, we went in search of the giant...

It is a giant carved on the hill. The history behind the giant is mixed but the first known written reference of the giant was in 1694.

The views in this area of Dorset are particularly beautiful.
Dorset will always have a special place in my heart

bientôt!

I'm (possibly inappropriately) fond of that giant - thanks for the photos! It was good to hear about your connections to the village too. Our last visit there was on a Sunday for a picnic, so we didn't visit any shops or cafés.

We stayed in a lovely cottage B and B in Piddlehinton in Dorset, and the couple also run that lovely tea shop in Cerne Abbas...at least they did when we last saw them.We stopped off in the village(Piddlehinton)on our way back from Cornwall and had lunch at the Thimble and had the best chips I have tasted...ever!
Great photos Isabelle. :0)

I love Dorset - one of those places I would love to live - it is so beautiful, and also weirdly familiar because of the descriptions in Thomas Hardy's novels.

We were lucky enough to see the Giant on our way through from Corfe Castle, although we did not have time to stop in the village. The photos are gorgeous!

Its so good to know that such beautiful places exist and seeing you great pictures , your fondness for Dorset emphasizes that. I'm so glad you included a picture of the giant!
They , the chalk drawings, are fascinating and its good to see it from the prespective of the road, and not just from on high. Thanks for a wonderful post.

Another lovely post that pulls at my heartstrings...our very distant family is from the UK, so perhaps that is the reason I feel like I am looking at "home" when I look at your photos. Especially the Tea Room!

Gorgeous photos, a really beautiful part of the country. You have to hand it to the Brits, nothing if not eclectic, nude giants hand in hand with cosy tea rooms.

Isabelle - I want to know if you indulged in the lovely cakes you said they were serving in the tea room!
I don't know if I could refuse.

Wonderful tourist-site you are blogging! It has been over 4 years now that I have left Oregon and traveled to Europe. My next trip has to be back to England. I love seeing your day-trip pics.

Thanks - Mary in Oregon

Villages like this remind me of why I love Dorset so much. I'm not really familiar with that area, although I have visited Dorchester several times. I think I see a day trip coming our way!

Have a wonderful weekend Isabelle.

Love Cerne. Abbots is the best shop for PURBECK ICE-CREAM on a lovely summers day. They give you the BIGGEST serving ever! yum! Great blog, and again, it reminds me how luck I am to live 5 minutes away from lovely villages in my lovely home county. I <3 Dorset. xx
