Steaming through the Somerset Countryside

The Birthday Girl

I have just returned from a lovely day out with my daughter, she will be 9 years old on Saturday. As she will be away with her Father on that day, I took her out on a Mother & daughter outing today. We went to East Somerset Railway at East Cranmore where Thomas the Tank engine is visiting. Over the past couple of days we have seen it go past our house and Miss P has been running out to wave to it. This time we were the passengers.

East Cranmore village. It has a very good pub called the Strode Arms which we go to from time to time.

Entrance to East Somerset Railway

Platform from a distance

View from the platform as you arrive

How different today's suitcases look...not as lovely as these

East Cranmore platform

I love the red telephone boxes, I do hope that they are never phased out.

The inside of the telephone box.

Such character!

Time to hop on to the train for a ride

Miss P is very excited! "Look, our house" she shouts out

Scenery on the way

We stop briefly at Mendip Vale Station to watch Thomas go to the front of the train, ready to make it's way back to East Cranmore

The show is about to begin

Miss P watched the Punch & Judy show (something I never took to, I still don't always get the British sense of humour sometimes...)

Wheee!!!!

Just had to come back with a little something to remind me of the day out. I look forward to trying out some of the lovely West Country recipes.

I really like the covers of this range of books by J. Salmon

I had a great day out!

We both enjoyed the day, weather was good. The only down side were the wasps! They were everywhere. That time of the year...

Thank you for all your lovely comments on DEVON BLISS posts! :0))

A bientôt!

What a lovely day out together, just mother and daughter - very special. Happy birthday to Phoebe. My daughter was 25 on the 7th & it hardly seems any time at all since she was 9. I love reading your blogs & looking at all your great photos. Ditto for the previous posts too.

That looks like a wonderful mother and daughter day, I really enjoyed your pics. We are hating the wasps as well, my eldest is terrified since she got stung last week :(

What a fab trip, I think now my car situation is sorted I will have to bundle the kiddlies in the car and pop on down... to take a trip back in time...

I am not loving the wasps either... our wasp trap is getting a little crowded..

happy birthday Miss P and keep waving at the trains... and when we go I will make sure we wave back!

Oh what a lovely post! My 13-year old is a train fanatic and I think he would love to see Thomas, wouldn't admit it though! Looks like a fun day out, but those wasps! My daughter was stung yesterday and ill of that today, so be carefull! I thought you were English! But I understand you are not? Of course I read your profile. My mother was Belgium too, my family lives around the borderline, some in Belgium the others in the Netherlands. Congrats to your daughter! I hope she will have another fun birthday too, that is one of the best parts!

What a lovely place. I like that stack of suitcases. My Nan said they always used to pack a trunk which was sent to the train station when they were going away, they didn't have to struggle with suitcases and nowhere to sit on the train. Those were the days. Don't worry about the Punch and Judy thing, us British don't always get what that's all about either.

Hello there...You seem to have caught my telephone kiosk/ post box bug! Aren't they wonderful: the kiosk on the platform is a really old K2 from 1926, and is a listed building. They aren't getting rid of any more K2's or K6's at all now, and are even re-instating some...however the not so pretty K8's were too young to be saved, although I've recently found some rare ones and my new post is full of telephone kiosks! I'm such an anorak...Lovely pics

Happy Birthday to Phoebe! It looks like a wonderful day out - we often did that when our boys were little, but in fact it's probably even better at 9!

What a wonderful day out! There's something rather special about trips on steam trains. I was always terrified of Punch and Judy when I was little! Happy Birthday to Miss P for Saturday! Katie x
