Healthy Habits: WALKING

In one of my recent posts I talked about the need to go back to healthier habits, walking being one of them. I used to walk 5km a day 5 mornings a week and that stopped some time ago as a busier life took over. I am pleased to say that I have started walking again. When Alan returns from work, we now all go on a family walk or cycle ride in Miss P's case.

Although I have only just recently started doing this, I am already beginning to feel the benefits! Not only am I giving my body some exercise but I am giving my soul some time to switch off and take in the beauty around me. That is so important, it's all too easy to get absorbed with the more serious side of life and forget to allow yourself time to relax and take in the beauty of what surrounds us.

Tonight I went on such a walk and these pictures are some of the things I saw on the way.

The good thing about having a family walk is that you get to spend some quality time together and talk about each others day. Miss P has learnt so much from walks like these such as plant names, birds and other little creatures...

A bientôt!

Love that photo of the scabious against the cloudy sky. You are so right about walking being good for the soul - somehow one gets things into perspective whilst walking and as you say you notice so many things which seen from a car would be just a blur! Keep it up I am sure you will feel so much benefit.

You are so right about walking! Due to our recent enforced car-less state Mr EM and I have been walking and bussing much more than usual. We are really enjoying it, and not only the health benefits, but money saving as well. We both have old farts bus passes, but we keep counting the fuel saved on car journeys we would have otherwise made, however short.

Great photos. How lovely to spend quality family time together and doing something so healthy too. I always think it's a shame that some children don't know names of wild flowers, birds, trees etc. which we learnt walking to school, nature tables etc. Your are obviously teaching Miss P these names. I had a long morning walk along the beach on Monday and thought what a wonderful start to the week.

I quite agree with you, I love walking and as a family we're only now managing to do just that. Before it was walk a few steps, then wait for one child or the other to finish pottering and then on again. Now the children walk well. I miss really long hearty walks but one day and hopefully we'll be able to do them. I need to exercise so badly as I spend too much time being sedentary and you're right, walking is good for the soul.

I hope you're having a lovely week.

I was chatting with a friend recently about the BENEFITS of getting old as she was full of doom and gloom re losing her "youth"
(I think I was born old, so it was a seamless transition for me!)

I said the thing I found most notably encouraging was how "food for the soul" is allowed to become a priority, and small nuturing steps are taken without guilt, and with MUCH pleasure.

Enjoy your walks xx

You can't beat a good walk - I love walking (as you know). It does help clear your head too. Loved your last post as I am off to Devon - near Dartmouth soon. xxxxx

That's a truly beautiful post, Isabelle. I agree that walking is the best exercise and you are fortunate to have such stunning scenery and peace to enjoy family walks in. We have some beautiful parks nearby which people come from all over the city for but that's the problem - so many people are there enjoying the beauty! I prefer your walks. Although I do enjoy walking along the city streets looking at some of the grand old houses. When the weather gets finer here I might take a walk and do a post to show you my neck of the urban woods. xx

For many years I used to walk 3 miles most days taking children to and from primary school - it's a lovely walk along the lane, and you have made me realize how little I do that now that they are all grown. It always helps to have a reason for a walk, but it does you so much good. I find now that I don't make the time because I feel guilty if I am not at home working!

I love walking. I do most of my thinking whilst out walking. Unfortunately the rest of the family see walking as a chore so I have to do it alone! You saw some lovely plants along the way. x

Beautiful photos. I'm off for a walk right now, just through the village to feed a friend's fish while she's on holiday, but it's so nice to be able to walk at my own pace instead of that of a 3 yr old, just for a change.
